map of the island, courtesy of RED FUNNEL, here.
The Isle of Wight totals approximately 147
square miles, with 57 miles of coast.
There are frequent ferry crossings from Lymington, Portsmouth and Southampton.
The island, which is the UK's smallest
county, has many notable points of
interest including, to the west, The
Needles, a rock formation extending into
the sea and Alum Bay an area featuring
different coloured sands. At the north
end of the island is Cowes, the sailing
resort that features the world-famous
Cowes Week. There are numerous
historical buildings on the island from
Roman remains through Tudor castles to
Classical and Victorian mansions.
The island attracts approximately 2.7
million visitors each year, with more
than 50% staying on the island.
Approximately half of the island is
designated as an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty, and
the Isle of Wight has a wide ranging
holiday appeal, especially due to its
favourable climate and long sunshine
hours.
Shanklin is one of the island's three main resorts,
which are located to the eastern side of the island
and features the best of the island’s beaches. The
other two main resorts in this area are Sandown,
which is about one mile north and Ventnor, about
three miles south. Ryde, another popular resort, is
about eight miles north.

The Fernbank Hotel is located in the ‘Old
Village’ of Shanklin. Highfield Road lies to the
southwest side of the town and runs south of
Victoria Avenue, which forms part of the A3020
Newport
road as it enters Shanklin.
The hotel stands on an elevated corner at the
southern end of Highfield Road and has attractive
views to the south across the countryside and east
towards the sea. The town centre and
beach are each approximately a quarter of a mile
away, the hotel has direct vehicular access to
on-site car parking.

Travelling from
Fishbourne Wightlink car ferry
Take the A3054 into Ryde. Dropping down onto the
Esplanade, follow the road right to the far end
of the Esplanade and the right-hand 90 degree
bend. Continue on this road, which becomes the A
3055 and follow the signs for Sandown, Shanklin
and Ventnor. It is virtually a straight road
right through to Shanklin.
Entering Shanklin, drive straight through the
new town area. Climbing the hill you will reach
the traffic lights at the top. Go straight on
through the lights and down the hill past
Daish’s Hotel (heading into Shanklin Old
Village) on your right. On your left is the car
park. Turn right into GRANGE ROAD (The red and
white Rock Shop is on the corner). Go to the end
of Grange Road and turn left. Follow the narrow
road around the right-hand bend and immediately
take the right-hand fork sharply up the hill.
The Fernbank is immediately on your right at the
top of the hill.
Travelling from East Cowes Red Funnel car ferry
Take the A3020 to Newport.
Once on the Newport by-pass (the only piece of
dual carriageway on the island!) keep on the
A3020, following the signs for Godshill and
Shanklin.
After passing through Godshill you will come to
a roundabout – go straight across, continuing on
the A3020.
As you begin to enter the outskirts of Shanklin,
you will be on Victoria Avenue. You will pass
the Hartland Hotel on your left.
A short distance further and there is a slight
right-hand bend in the road with roads off to
the right and left. Take the right-hand turn
into HIGHFIELD ROAD (the road heads immediately
up a slight incline, although the sign is not
easy to see!!). The Fernbank Hotel is at the far
end of Highfield Road on the left-hand side.
(If you miss the Highfield Road turning and
arrive at the traffic lights in the centre of
Shanklin, turn right at the lights and go down
the hill past Daish’s Hotel (heading into
Shanklin Old Village) on your right. On your
left is the car park. Turn right into GRANGE
ROAD (The red and white Rock Shop is on the
corner). Go to the end of Grange Road and turn
left. Follow the narrow road around the
right-hand bend and immediately take the
right-hand fork sharply up the hill. The
Fernbank is immediately on your right at the top
of the hill.

September to Easter). Upon arrival at Shanklin

By Bus
Take the half hourly Southern Vectis Number 3
(Ventnor) bus from the Bus Station at Ryde
Esplanade to Shanklin Old Village.

traffic lights, opposite Daish’s Hotel. Walk
across the road to the Rock Shop and turn right
into Grange Road. Go to the end of Grange Road
and turn left. Follow the narrow road around the
right-hand bend and immediately take the
right-hand fork sharply up the hill. The
Fernbank is immediately on your right at the top
of the hill. Approximately a 300 yard walk from
